How to successfully apply for a skilled worker visa

A skilled worker visa is a type of work visa that allows you to come to or stay in the UK to do an eligible job with an approved employer. This visa has replaced the Tier 2 (General) work visa. If you want to apply for a skilled worker visa, you need to follow these steps:

  1. Check if you need a visa and what type you need. You must have a job offer from an approved UK employer before you apply for a skilled worker visa. Approved employers are also known as ‘sponsors’. If your employer is not currently approved, they can apply for a sponsor licence if they’re eligible1. Irish citizens do not require a visa.

  2. Check your eligibility for a skilled worker visa. You must meet the following requirements:

    • Work for a UK employer that’s been approved by the Home Office.

    • Have a ‘certificate of sponsorship’ from your employer with information about the role you’ve been offered in the UK.

    • Do a job that’s on the list of eligible occupations.

    • Be paid a minimum salary - how much depends on the type of work you do. You’ll usually need to be paid at least £27,000 per year or the going rate for your occupation, whichever is higher.

    • Prove your knowledge of English. You’ll usually need to pass an approved English language test or have an academic qualification that was taught in English and is recognised by UK NARIC.

  3. Apply online for your visa within 3 months of getting your certificate of sponsorship. You’ll need to prove your identity and provide documents to show your eligibility. How you do this depends on where you’re from and what type of passport you have. You’ll either go to an appointment at a visa application centre or use the ‘UK Immigration: ID Check’ smartphone app. You’ll also need to pay the application fee and the healthcare surcharge as part of your application.

  4. Wait for a decision on your visa. Once you’ve applied online, proved your identity and provided your documents, you’ll usually get a decision within 3 weeks if you’re outside the UK and within 8 weeks if you’re inside the UK. If your application is successful, you’ll get a vignette (sticker) in your passport or a digital status that shows when you can enter and leave the UK, and what conditions apply to your stay.

By following these steps, you can increase your chances of getting a skilled worker visa and working in the UK. If you need any help or advice with your visa application, you can contact us for expert assistance. We are here to help you achieve your goals in the UK.
